Double bill comes to the Baxter

Choreographer, dance artist and activist Mamela Nyamza, brings two provocative works, Rock to the Core and De-Apart-Hate, to the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio for a short season from Tuesday October 17 to Saturday October 28.

The double bill articulates her approach to dance and performance, one driven by her efforts to challenge herself and the world she lives in.

In Rock to the Core, the 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist winner sets out to rock the art fraternity to the core by demanding change and transformation within the arts and its mainstream exclusive theatres.

The work was born out of protest Nyamza led earlier this year at the Fleur du Cap Awards ceremony at Artscape theatre. It was a protest against the under-representation of black artists, in particular, black women, in the arts.

Featuring Chuma Sopotela, Zikhona Zee Jacobs, Indalo Bennet and Buhlebezwe Siwani, the work had its world premiere at the Cape Town Fringe Festival.

Nyamza returns to the stage to perform De-Apart-Hate, with Aphiwe Livi. It reflects complexities of current issues in society and the world.

The two-hander uses religion to symbolise the pervasiveness of oppressive and divisive forces that infiltrate all society.

Rock to the Core runs from Tuesday October 17 to Saturday October 21, at 7.30pm. De-Apart-Hate runs from Tuesday October 24 to Saturday October 28, at 7.30pm. Both productions have 3pm Saturday matinees and an age restriction of 14. Tickets cost R100 and R60 for students and pensioners presenting identification.
