Don’t wait for last minute to renew gun licence – police

You need a licence for every firearm that you possess.

Holders of gun licences should apply for renewals three months before the licences expire, say the Grassy Park police.

If you want to own a firearm, you must undergo the training at an accredited institution and obtain a training proficiency certificate.

Once you have this certificate, you can apply for the firearm licence at your nearest police station. You need a licence for every firearm that you possess.

To apply or for other gun-licence queries, contact the station’s firearms officer Sergeant Carol Strauss at 060 506 3598 or 021 700 3947. Families of deceased gun owners can also contact her to avoid being prosecuted for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Meanwhile, Grassy Park police spokeswoman Captain Wynita Kleinsmith has advised second-hander dealers to make sure they have the necessary licence to buy and sell second-hand goods.

“Anyone who is found selling without a licence is liable to be fined or imprisoned,” she said.
