Police cracked down on drugs this festive season and made several arrests.
On Wednesday January 2, at about 6:15pm, officers who are part of the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) arrested a 28-year-old man in St Ambrose Circle in St Montague Village for the possession of tik.
The officers had been patrolling when they noticed the suspect and searched him.
They found 156 packets of tik in his possession. The man was arrested and detained at Steenberg police station and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday January 3 on a charge of possession of drugs.
Grassy Park police arrested three people in connection with a double murder that happened on Wednesday January 2.
The victims, a 30-year-old suspected gangster and his 26-year-old girlfriend, were shot and killed in Cuckoo Crescent after midnight in a drive by shooting. A third person was wounded in the incident.
The first suspect was arrested within a matter of hours of the incident, the other two the following day. All three suspects appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court on Friday January 4 on charges of murder and attempted murder. Bail was denied. In further efforts to make communities safe from guns and drugs.
Late last month, officers from the National Public Order Policing (POP) Unit, with the assistance of the Carltonville K9 Unit, arrested two people aged 29 and 34, for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of mandrax and the possession of presumed stolen property, in St Ambrose Circle, St Montague Village on Thursday December 27 at about 10:45pm.
During stop and search operations in the area on Thursday December 27, the officers searched a man and woman walking in the road around 10.45pm. They found an Astra-Unceta pistol with eight live rounds of ammunition and its serial number filed off; thirteen13 whole mandrax tablets, one black Dell laptop and a black and grey volt cellphone in their possession.
The two were arrested and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday December 28.
