Earth Angels show kindness

A group of women are doing all they can to assist children from underprivileged schools.

The Earth Angels launched their first project last week at Zeekoevlei Primary School in Lotus River where they handed over several pairs of school shoes and uniforms to those who had broken shoes and those who didn’t have school shoes at all.

Felicity Mopp and Rebecca Thomas make various things by hand to raise funds for their shoe project.

Founder Ms Mopp, from Retreat ,started the group by giving families grocery packs but then started
making and selling bathroom mats to buy school shoes for children in
need.

“I still do the grocery packs but because there is a need in schools we decided to do the shoes. We want to grow bigger and help all the schools in the Western Cape. We started at Zeekoevlei Primary because I met the principal who told me about some of the hardships at the school,” she said.

She also gets support from German friends who contribute to their project.

Ms Thompson makes and sells tissue holders, picture frames and other things to raise funds.

“At one point my children and I didn’t have a lot so I know how it feels and I vowed to give back to the community when I can and now I’m doing it this way,” she said.

Principal Graham Ritchie said the school is extremely grateful for their kind contributions.

“There are always people out there who want to do good but sometimes they don’t know how. Felicity and her team have come here and opened their hearts and hands to help our children. Children who come from six informal settlements and three farms and many backyard dwellings, so poverty is a serious problem in our area.

“These children go through shoes quite quickly because some of them walk 6.6km a day to and from school, so they are in need of shoes, socks, underwear and other things so we welcome any help. We are grateful for their time and effort. Thank you so much,”he said.
