City of Cape Town facility officers and play leaders have been offering recreational programmes for Seawinds, Steenberg, Retreat and Parkwood residents, from Monday to Friday, at Seawinds Multipurpose Centre.
Llewelyn Pietersen and his team run a variety of programmes, including a ladies fitness group, a walking club, a seniors’ club and a social group for people with disabilities.
“Recreation allows me to be an agent of change within the community. It is a tool to bring residents together and to combat the social ills and the decay that hurts many of our communities,” said Mr Pietersen.
He adds that organised recreation helps to bring the community together.
“From all walks of life, they come into a safe space where they can be active instead of being isolated in their homes or spending time on the streets.”
His goal is to change the mind-set of especially the youth, who believe that where they come from defines who they are.
“My message to young people is that they should not allow others to place them in boxes. They must take ownership of their lives and set themselves on a path to achieve their goals,” said Mr Pietersen.
The City’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has committed millions of rands to provide recreational programmes which unify communities and encourage a healthy lifestyle among residents. These programmes would not be a success without the dedication and drive of the more than 80 staff members who pull it all together.
Anda Ntsodo, Mayoral committee member for community services, encouraged residents to take part in the activities.
“Research indicates that sustained involvement in sport and recreation programmes can help to combat challenges in communities such as alcohol and drug abuse, crime and vandalism. Keeping residents active and engaged in their free time and providing a safe space for residents to socialise is critical for real community cohesion and development,” said Mr Ntsodo.
Programmes run from from 8.30am to 7pm. For more information contact the City on 021 822 4111 or visit the centre.
