The Princess Vlei Forum will hold the fifth Flight of Dreams parade through Grassy Park on Saturday September 15. The event is organised each year to celebrate the talent of local youth, and to encourage community members to appreciate the rich birdlife and other nature at Princess Vlei.
The event is a collaboration of the Princess Vlei Forum, the Peter Clarke Art Centre, the Jungle Theatre Company and eMzantsi Carnival.
In the parade, youths will carry giant bird puppets, as well as smaller puppets and masks that they have made through the year. The parade will also feature the Fairmount High Cadets and the eMzantsi Carnival Blokka band and will leave the Calvin Protestant Church at 164 Third Avenue at 2.30 pm, moving down to Third Avenue to Victoria Road and proceed down First Avenue and across Prince George Drive to Princess Vlei.
Paraders will be entertained by EmileYX? and Mixed Mense. There will be a performance by Lotus High, entitled The Great Bird Race, and Jungle Theatre will perform When Lion had Wings. Both of these are based on KhoiSan legends, and aim to highlight the nature as well as the rich cultural heritage of Princess Vlei.
There will be an exhibition of pupil art works related to Princess Vlei at the Grassy Park Library from until Monday September 17, as well as a performance of the Lotus High play at 3.15pm on Thursday September 13.
All events are free, and participation is welcome. For more information email imagine@princessvlei.org.
