I read with interest of
Dr Rodney Rhoda’s claim to have been the first “brown” pharmacist to be “capped “ at UWC in 1968 (“Unearthing natural medicine”, Southern Mail, December 5).
While he is technically correct, the first and only pharmacist of colour to graduate from UWC in 1966 was Bryan M. Solomon, a Genadendaler.
He chose not to attend the graduation ceremony so he was not “capped “ as he did not want to be a showpiece of the apartheid government’s so-called “separate but equal” policy.
Hats off to you Mr Solomon, for having taken your stand all of 52 years ago.
