Wynberg Magistrate’s Court sentenced alleged gangster Enrico Lewis, 25, from Ottery to eight years imprisonment for the illegal possession of a firearm and two years for being in possession of ammunition.
The case had been investigated by the late Detective Constable Patrick Sikade who was killed on Monday April 18 while sitting in his police car in front of his house in Philippi East.
Detective Constable Sikade was a member of the Grassy Park Serious and Violent Crimes Unit established to investigate all serious crimes at station level.
The late Detective Constable Sikade completed a lengthy investigation against Lewis after he was arrested on August 14 last year.
Lewis was found in possession of a Z88 9mm Parabellum, one magazine and nine live rounds of ammuni- tion.
Grassy Park crime prevention officers were patroling Strandfontein Road when they spotted Lewis who attempted to flee but was caught.
Lieutenant Etienne van Ede of the Grassy Park detective branch thanked the officers for their part in apprehending Lewis and making sure that another illegal firearm is off the streets.
The police also commended the late Detective Constable Sikade for his work in the investigation of the case and ensuring that the accused faced the full might of the law.
