Hillwood Primary School held their annual Granny Day on Thursday May 16 at Lorret’s Kitchen in Grassy Park. The event is held to celebrate grandmothers and the importance they play in the pupils’ lives. Many pupils are raised by their grandmothers. Principal Gavin Alkana said many grannies are the sole providers. “They have to pay for rent, food and support the household on their South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants. This is a small contribution to say thank you to them once a year,” he said. The event was started in 2016 and grannies get served a meal. Thirty-four grannies attended the Granny Day, one for each of the school’s 34 classes.
