It’s been a bloody weekend in the Steenberg police precinct with several shooting incidents.
Police are asking for the community’s help in connection with murder and attempted murder cases which are believed to be gang-related.
On Sunday August 16, an 18-year-old man was shot
and killed in Chapel Road, Lavender Hill, at about 9:30pm.
Steenberg police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the man had been walking in the road when he was approached by two unknown suspects who fired multiple shots at him.
He died on the scene. Sergeant Twigg said the motive for the shooting was gang related. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, at about 3:20am, a 33-year-old man was shot and killed in Volksang Road, Retreat.
Police were called to the scene where they found the body with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspects are unknown and a case of murder has been opened for investigation.
A 31-year-old man was shot and killed on Saturday August 15, in Mozart Street, Steenberg, at about 8pm.
Sergeant Twigg said according to reports the man had been walking in the street when a silver vehicle drove by and the occupants shot him in the abdomen and buttocks. He died on the way to hospital. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
At about 6.15pm, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed, and 29-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were shot and wounded in Shepherd Way in Lavender Hill. According to reports the victims had been standing on the corner when four unknown suspects started shooting at them.
“The victims were transported to a medical facility for treatment, but the one victim succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital,” said Sergeant Twigg.
Also on the same day at about 6:30pm, a 50-year-old man was shot and killed in Eleventh Avenue, Retreat.
The man had been walking in the street when three unknown suspects started shooting at him.
The victim ran and collapsed in a yard in Eleventh Avenue. The motive for the shooting is unknown.
