Steenberg police need the help of Lavender Hill residents in two separate murder and attempted murder cases.
In the first tragic incident, on Wednesday May 4, 26-year-old Jerome Jones was gunned down on the corner of St Christopher and St Bernard streets, St Montague Village, where he went to meet his mother as she arrived from work.
Jerome had walked his mother home from the bus stop every day but last week, he was approached by two unknown men in a vehicle.
The passenger fired one shot at Jerome who sustained a gunshot wound to his back.
Jerome’s father transported him to the Retreat Communtiy Health Centre but he was declared dead at the facility.
The motive for the shooting is unknown. A case of murder is being investigated. Anyone with information can call Steenberg police station at 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. All information will be treated as confidential.
* On Thursday May 5, at about 10am, police were called out to a shooting incident at the corner of Eltister Road and Prince George Drive. A group of people had been sitting on the corner when a silver Toyota with three occupants stopped in front of them. The two passengers fired several shots at the group.
Two men, aged 18 and 19, sustained gunshot wounds to their feet. The victims were transported to Retreat day hospital for medical treatment.
The motive for the shooting is allegedly gang-related and a case of attempted murder was opened for investigation.
Police are also urging residents not to go towards crime scenes as the perpetrators may still be in the area and more shootings may occur. Residents are also urged not to tamper with any evidence as this may hamper the investigation.
