Myrtle February, former principal, Hyde Park Primary
Lucille Carolus, who died on Thursday May 28, was a founder member of Hyde Park Primary School where she taught until she retired, at 65, in December 2009.
She was totally committed to the school and its pupils and contributed extensively towards creating the school of excellence that Hyde Park still is today.
Ms Carolus was a “one-of-a-kind” larger-than-life character – strict, but with a great love for the pupils she taught.
Former pupils still ask about her whenever they come to enroll their own children at Hyde Park.
She was actively involved in all kinds of extramural activities, whether it was athletics, netball, choir or line-dancing. She would train and coach with the unbounded energy with which she approached most educational activities.
Ms Carolus was always the last to leave school in the afternoons, and one would often see her walking up Hyde Road heavily laden with bags of books to mark at home.
She will be fondly remembered by her former colleagues for her enthusiasm, her dedication and her voice of encouragement, which echoed through the passages of Hyde Park Primary School during the 37 years that she served the school community.
Ms Carolus is survived by her daughter, Chanelle, son-in-law, Michael, and granddaughter, Nadége.
