Ward 67 councillor Gerry Gordon hosted two information sessions at the Lotus River sports and recreation civic centre on Thursday April 27 (Freedom Day) to raise awareness about various issues.
Residents of the Lotus River flats and court areas; Thembelishile and Eagle Park; Pelican Park; and Phumlani Village attended sessions.
Ms Gordon said one topic of discussion was gender-based violence: “It is important to identify the signs when you are in an abusive situation,” said Ms Gordon.
She added that young people should set goals for themselves while they are still single and work to become become self-sufficient.
Chantelle Heyns, an Enrolled Nursing Assistant (ENA) at the Pelican Park Community Day Centre clinic, spoke on chronic illnesses including diabetes, hypertension and asthma as the clinic has chronic clubs for patients who have been diagnosed with these illnesses.
Yolanda Savage, guest speaker and facilitator from the Department of Justice (DoJ) at Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, spoke on child maintenance and domestic violence.
