The children of Wicht Court and St Bernard Street in Lavender Hill received some tasty treats from Meals on Wheels and Women Hope for the Nation on Mandela Day. Carmen Stemmet, Meals on Wheels manager, contacted Adele Campbell, chairperson of Wicht Court committee, and offered to feed the children with a meal that was sponsored to them. “Myself and Aysha Davids (from Women Hope for the Nation) are community activists so we decided to go with Ms Stemmet’s idea of feeding the kids. Our area has been volatile for a while now and these children have been kept inside as if they are prisoners, so we want to show these kids that there are still people who care,” said Ms Campbell. The handing out of meals started in Wicht Court and then the women made their way to St Bernard Street. They were accompanied by SAPS and Southern Eye Neighbourhood Watch. TARA ISAACS captured the event..
