Desire Goliath, programme manager, Steenberg
Young local musicians of Musiquelaine SA recently finished as runners up in a prestigious national music competition against some of the best bands and orchestras in South Africa.
Musiquelaine SA is a music education programme based at Steenberg High School. It facilitates various music development projects from primary through high school, to tertiary levels, empowering youth by providing positive and healthy lifestyle options that have far-reaching implications beyond the music room.
Earlier this year, the music tutors selected 12 young musos from the senior wind symphonic orchestra to represent Musiquelaine SA at the Stellenbosch University National Ensemble Competition, #SUNEC2023, as a Jazz Big Band.
After a series of tough audition rounds, they eventually made the finals, an incredible achievement on its own. To understand the significance of this accomplishment, one must understand that they were up against schools where music is a fully developed curriculum subject studied full-time.
At the finals they delivered polished performances to win the runners up position, a major accolade.
If you would like to see them, their peers and their music tutors in action, please join Musiquelaine SA for their year-end concert and awards ceremony on Thursday December 7 from 7pm, at the Steenberg High School Hall. Tickets are available from the music room at the school or call 082 594 9082.
