Nabeelah Ebrahim was among the top three under-11 girls and received a silver medal for obtaining second place at the first Western Province schools chess trials for 2020, at Fairmount High School, in Grassy Park.
The trials were held from Friday January 31 to Saturday February 1.
Nabeelah started her chess career when she entered the South District Western Province (WP) chess trials at the age of 8. She then qualified for the next Western Province trials where she represented the South District team.
Her excellent performance led to her being chosen by Western Province to represent the girls under-10. A team to play in the South African Junior Chess Championship in Boksburg, Johannesburg. At this tournament she played seven rounds of which she won six and drew one game.
Her father Nazeem said: “We hope that she gets an invitation to participate in the South African Junior Chess Closed Championship tournament which will be held in March, in Benoni, where the SA teams will be selected.”
