The bodies of two young boys were discovered drowned in the Zandvlei estuary on Friday night December 30.
Captain Stephen Knapp said: “We can confirm that at 6.45pm, Muizenberg police responded to a drowning at the Zandvlei Estuary.”
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the bodies of two boys, aged 6 and 8 years.
The boys, both from of Overcome Heights, were floating in the estuary. They were both declared dead on the scene, after being recovered by police divers.
“We can further confirm that an inquest docket has been opened at Muizenberg SAPS and is being investigated by Detective Sergeant Milicent Teichardt,” said Captain Knapp.
“It is believed that the two boys drowned after they were seen swimming in the vlei. It is alleged that the boys were part of a grouping of four children,” he said.
Ward 67 councillor Gerry Gordon said cousins Cameron Johnstone, 8, and Fernando Johnstone, 6, had drowned after they went for a swim without their parents’ permission. “The parents have requested that they not be contacted by the media ,as they do not feel like giving statements at this time. “On behalf of the City of Cape Town, we have conveyed condolences to both families and have offered support if they need it,” she said.
