Muizenberg police have been cracking down on gun possession with 12 firearms and various calibres of ammunition recovered since the beginning of December.
Last week a 27-year-old Retreat man was arrested on Tuesday January 2 when he was caught with an illegal gun in his possession.
At about 4.30pm officers from Muizenberg SAPS’s Operation Combat were busy with crime prevention patrols in St Peter’s Street, Seawinds, when the officers noticed three suspicious men.
On seeing the police, one of the suspects ran and the officers gave chase.
They noted that the suspect was carrying something wrapped in a black beanie in his right hand.
The suspect was pursued to St Ralph Street, where he dropped the beanie and jumped onto the roof of one of the houses.
The officers recovered the beanie and found it to contain a 9mm Norinco pistol loaded with 10 live rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was arrested when coming down from the roof and detained at Muizenberg police for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Acting station commander of Muizenberg SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Mzwandile Gqabi, said in light of the ongoing conflict between gangs in the Seawinds, Hillview and surrounding areas, they strongly urge the community to provide information with regards to illegal firearm and ammunition.
He said this information ultimately will assist the police in their fight against gangsterism, as it is only with the support of the community that meaningful successes can be achieved.
