Reading competition returns to Retreat

Participants in the Retreat Library Reading Competition with organisers and staff.

The annual Retreat Library Reading Competition went ahead this year after a two-year absence because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Grade 7s from Delta and Floreat primary schools competed on Thursday November 30. They were accompanied to the library by their teachers and Grade 6s who made up the audience.

Greg Philander, the former chairman of the Friends of Retreat Library, ran the programme, and librarians from Ottery, Lotus River and Retreat adjudicated.

Tamzin Phillips and Joshua Bumbangi, both from Floreat, won the Afrikaans and English categories, respectively, while Caleb de Waal, from Delta, was named “most promising reader”.

Winners of the reading competition, from left, are Tamzin Phillips from Floreat Primary, Caleb de Waal from Delta Primary and Joshua Bumbangi from Floreat Primary.
