Rotary’s gift to school

The Rotary Club of Wynberg installed a small library in each of the eight foundation phase classes at Montagu Gift Primary School on Saturday June 10 as part of their Library Corner Project which is an example of a small.

The Library Corner Project was started by Rotarian Justin Schonegevel in 2014 and has delivered 30 library corners to three other schools in the Lotus River community, namely Perivale, Lotus River and Stephen Road primary schools, before the recent one at Montagu Gift Primary School.

The Rotary Club of Wynberg has focused on sustainable educational projects in the community to improve the literacy of pupils entering high school.

Montagu Gift Primary caters for 500 pupils from Grade R to Grade 7, who come from the communities of Lotus River and Parkwood.

The school boasts a well-run reading programme offered by Wordworks, a project the school is also very proud of.

The library corners are well used by pupils who are excited to go to the corner before school and whenever they can.

Mr Schonegevel said their club believes by bringing the library into the classroom it makes reading easier and more accessible to the pupils and teachers which saves time for all.

Each shelf is different and graded to reading levels; they are interchanged between classrooms in the year to increase the exposure of books to the classrooms. “This is how we bring dreams to children of Montagu Gift,” said Mr Schonegevel.

The Rotary Club of Wynberg is planning their next library corner delivery for Southfield Primary School in the coming Rotary Year, and welcome public donations of children’s reading books for ages four to nine that are in good condition.

The Rotary Club of Wynberg meets every Thursday and these meetings are open to guests.
