SAPS clamp down on gun activity

Steenberg police made arrests in several gun-related incidents over the weekend.

Two people were treated for gunshot wounds after a shooting in Eltister Street, Lavender Hill, on Saturday July 1, at about 8.40am.

A 36-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were at a shop when two men fired several shots at them, then fled the scene on foot. The man and woman sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and thigh, respectively.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder but no arrests have been made.

* Steenberg police arrested two men for possession of an imitation firearm and pointing of a firearm in Flute Road, Retreat, on Friday June 30.

At about 11.30am, a man was approached by one suspect as he was on his was to his vehicle. The suspect asked the driver for a lift and the driver refused. The suspect then threatened the driver with a gun and was joined by another suspect.

They ordered him to drive to Choir Street in Steenberg but the driver drove to the Retreat railway police station where the two men were arrested.

In a separate incident, a 15-year-old boy was arrested for possession of an illegal gun. Officers from the Stabilisation Unit were busy with patrols in Lavender Hill at 6.20pm when they found the youngster from Shepherd Court with a 9mm pistol in his possession.

He was taken to Wynberg police station.
