Sharevilla Sports Club, in Sharedon Park, was established in November last year but had its official launch on Saturday February 25, on the open field at the back of Sharedon Park and opposite the Zandvlei Nature Reserve.
Eric Bailey, chairman of the club, said it is operating in the greater Steenberg area, where unemployment, gangsterism and drugs are rife.
“We are trying to to create a safety alternative to the ills in our community, by offering sports activities to our members in a safe environment.”
He said children were entertained with various sports activities such as netball, touch rugby, cricket, soccer, a fun walk through the nature re-
serve, face painting and even dance session.
“We had a motivational speaker who spoke about drug and alcohol abuse and members of Muizenberg SAPS gave a talk on safety awareness. Sergeant Ryan Sauls presented a self defence demonstration while the U.N.I.T., a neighbourhood watch operating from Kalk Bay to Sharedon Park, graced us with their presence for the whole day and that in itself presented a safety net for the security and safety of our kids and parents.
