The newly-found Khululani Youth Foundation teamed up with Nyanga-based Silucendo Organisation to pamper the residents at the St George’s Home for Girls in Wynberg last Saturday August 24, for Women’s Month.
The two non-profits worked together to deliver party packs, toiletries and snacks to the home, which houses 37 girls from the ages of 3 to 21.
They also arranged games to play with the girls and held talent and fashion shows. The Rondebosch-based Khululani Youth Foundation is a newly-registered non-profit that was formed last December by Sinovuyo Mankayi who served as Junior City Council (JCC) mayor of Cape Town last year.
Sinovuyo, a Grade 11 pupil at Rhodes High School, currently serves as child parliamentarian for the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund.
He formed Khululani Youth Foundation, which is currently
self-funded, to address social problems that young people face, such as substance abuse and depression.
“We visited St George’s to focus on young people. Each one of the women from Silucendo adopted a girl for the day and spent time and provided gift packs to them,” he said.
Chairperson of Siluncedo Organisation, Bahle Ngqula, said they wanted to celebrate women’s month by giving back. “We mainly focus on children’s wellbeing, this month we visited close to five homes to celebrate women’s month and girl empowerment,” he said.
St George’s child and youth care worker, Karen Ariefdien, says they are grateful that the organisations came to spend time with the girls. “Every little bit of attention the girls get is helpful, children do need a lot of care and attention and they enjoy it, it helps them grow.”
