Steenberg High School will host it’s first CFLAT Youth Jazz Festival at the school on Sunday March 11.
The school will partner with Musiquelaine SA, the Fostering Foundation, Music Exchange and RJ Benjamin for the inaugural jazz festival that will be held at the school’s 1 000-seater outdoor Alstom Music Pavilion.
Taking part will be the Steenberg High Wind Band, the South Peninsula High School Jazz Band, the Steenberg High Jazz Band, the Steenberg High Jazz Ensemble, the Stellenbosch University Jazz Ensemble and artists from the Fostering Foundation, including special guest, Sophia Foster.
RJ Benjamin will be mentoring the Steenberg High Jazz Band in the week running up to the festival and will be performing some his own material, from his sold-out Orbit Jazz show.
Sophia Foster, who has decades of music knowledge, international performance experience and vocal skills to share, will also dedicating some time before the event to refine the Steenberg musicians’ repertoire and integrate the Fostering Foundation singers into the festival programme. In 2013, the school introduced a music education project, created by the NGO Musiquelaine SA.
The purpose of the CFLAT Youth Jazz Festival is to create an opportunity to showcase the musically talented youth of the Cape Flats and enable mentorship for aspiring performers.
The vision is for the CFlat Youth Jazz Festival to be an annual event and the precursor to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
Tickets for the festival are available at the school or via Quickticket for R50.
The event will start at 3pm at the school in Symphony Avenue, Steenberg.
