The City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for area south, Eddie Andrews, this week joined 13 families during one of the Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department’s broader substance abuse prevention projects – the Strengthening Families programme held at the Steenberg Community Centre. Internationally recognised, this programme has been found to significantly reduce problem behaviours, delinquency and substance abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. The programme has also been found to improve parenting skills. It uses practical and interactive methods to encourage communication between parents and children and previous feedback has shown that participants are less likely to engage in substance use in adulthood.
