Police arrested a Steenberg teen on drug-dealing charges and seized R150 000 worth of tik after an undercover officer overheard a suspicious phone conversation.
According to Steenberg police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the officer was at the Military Road shopping centre on Thursday August 1, at 1.30pm, when he overheard a teenager talking on his cellphone warning the person on the other end of the line that there was a police car in the vicinity.
The youth appeared to be very nervous and seemed to be on the lookout for police in the area.
The undercover officer, Sector 2 manager Constable Julian Jacob, then called for backup.
Muizenberg station commander Colonel Vassie Naidoo, who was patrolling the area, responded to the call.
He had found five 100g packets of tik with an estimated street value of R150 000 when he had searched the youth, said Sergeant Twigg. Police arrested a 16-year-old suspect.
“We are cognisant of the fact that the youth are often pressured to carry or conceal drugs and it is with this in mind I encourage the youth to steer clear of criminal activity,” Colonel Naidoo said.
