Thurston bags minstrel trophies

Thurston Hendricks, 35, a music teacher at Cafda School of Skills, stood proud after bringing home two trophies from the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association competition, held at the Faure Stadium, in Paarl, on Saturday February 12. He took fourth place for his rendition of Bed of Roses and second place in another song category, for singing Mack the Knife. He says he has been singing, and winning trophies, with the minstrels from the age of 8. “It’s part of my culture. My wife, Ashleigh, is one of my biggest supporters… For me, it’s not about winning or losing but it’s about participation.”
Thurston Hendricks and the Lavender Superstars came fourth as a group, at the finals of the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association competition.
