A truck got stuck under the bridge in Rockley Road, Wynberg, on Thursday afternoon, according to a neighbourhood watch member who took a picture of it.
Sally Makaure was driving from Lester Road at 4.50pm and saw the front of the truck stuck under the bridge as she turned into Rockley Road. The driver was trying to reverse out from under the bridge, she said.
“When I saw the traffic building up I quickly turned right and drove away because I didn’t want to be caught in a crazy traffic jam.”
It appears the driver was able to dislodge the vehicle because according to ward councillor Carmen Siebritz, the incident was not reported to the traffic department.
“This is a frequent occurrence due to driver behaviour. In my opinion, the driver should be fined for not adhering to the road sign and the company be held liable for possible damages to infrastructure. Perhaps if they face tougher consequences, attitudes and behaviour will be changed,” she said.
Yunus Karriem, the chairperson of the Wynberg East Civic Association, also referred to previous incidents of trucks getting stuck. “Drivers don’t adhere to height restrictions or are oblivious to them,” he said.
The City’s traffic department did not respond to questions by deadline.
