Steenberg police are investigating two counts of murder following a shooting incident in the early hours of Friday February 16 where two men aged 26 and 37 were shot and killed at a home in Ashley Court.
According to reports, unknown gunmen forced through the door of the house and opened fire.
Both victims sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies and were declared dead on the scene by medical personnel, said provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg. The motive for the shooting is believed to be gang-related and the suspects are yet to be arrested.
Anyone with any information about this shooting can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
In a separate case, Sergeant Twigg said concerted efforts to fight gang violence, through the removal of firearms from the streets in the Steenberg policing precinct, led to the arrest of a 47-year-old man when he was caught in possession of a firearm without a valid licence by officers attached to the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit.
The team of officers were doing stop and search operations in the Lavender Hill area on Saturday February 17 when they received information about a suspect who was in possession of a firearm in Military Road. The officers spotted the man and searched him. He had a 38 calibre special revolver with ammunition in his possession.
He was due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday February 19.
