Grassy Park police arrested two men from the Ottery flats on Friday April 20 after there were reports of two armed men robbing people in Victoria Road.
WarrantOfficerWynita Kleinsmith, spokesperson for Grassy Park police, said Constable Adrian Baron and Winston van Schalkwyk knew who to look for after a member of the public described the clothing of the two suspects.
“While busy patrolling down that road, the officers spotted the two suspects, they stopped them, and a woman approached the officers and reported that they tried to take her cellphone. The two men, aged 17 and 27 from Ottery flats (affiliated with a gang in Ottery) were arrested on charges of robbery.”
* GrassyParkCommunity Police Forum (CPF) said a “trolley pusher” found with a gun was apprehended by a local security service provider before being handed over to the Grassy Park police, on Friday April 20.
Philip Bam, spokesperson for the CPF, said: “A trolley pusher was found with a 9mm pistol with live ammunition in Fairways thanks to the alert neighbourhood watch and police.
“The suspect is allegedly a member of (a gang) in Parkwood Estate.”
Later police also arrested a young man attempting to rob a 35-year-old woman of her cellphone in Victoria Road.
Mr Bam said: “Apparently, this youngster is also a gang member who steals to feed his drug habit. He uses mandrax (buttons) which cost him R35 a tablet. One shudders to think what harm could have befallen this woman if police did not act swiftly.” He said these arrests follow interaction between the community and the police.
“For a long time now, the CPF on behalf of the community have been asking for the guns to be taken off our streets and we are pleased that the police are following through.”
