Despite long queues, delays and mishaps with scanners at some voting stations, voters who spoke to the Southern Mail on election day last week were eager to make their mark.
Elizabeth Smith, 78, of Parkwood, voted at the Southern Suburbs Youth Academy after waiting for several hours in the queue.
She said she did not mind the long wait to cast her ballot if it helped to bring positive change.
Another voter, Juliana Barendse, 59, Parkwood, said it was every South African’s responsibility to vote.
“Voting day is very important for us to be heard and seen, and we need change. And at the end of the day, political parties need to work together for the betterment of the people. Is that not what the purpose of government is?”
This election has seen a sharp drop in support for the ANC, which for the first time has lost its majority, forcing it to seek coalition partners to form a government. With all the votes counted, the ANC has 40.18% of votes nationally, followed by the DA with 21.81% and MK with 14.58%.
