Steenberg police have warned that anyone found in the possession of an imitation gun will be arrested.
They said gang members and thieves use these imitation firearms to rob people of their belongings as it is difficult to distinguish between a real or an imitation firearm from a distance.
A 20-year-old man was arrested in Retreat Road and a 16-year-old boy in Lakeview on Saturday March 17 for having imitation
guns.
On Friday, two more men, aged 24 and 30, who are self-confessed gang members, were arrested on the same charge when police found an imitation gun on the frame of the motorbike they were riding.
Officers from Grassy Park police’s crime prevention unit also arrested a 37-year- old man on Sunday March 18 after he was found in possession of a gun wrapped in masking tape.He will face charges relating to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Grassy Park police acting station commander, Colonel Christian Esau, says the reward system has helped in the battle against crime.
“This system allows any adult member of the community to become pro-actively involved in the prevention of crime. Crime and criminals can be reported and a reward could be received by the reporter,” said Colonel Esau.
