The 34/18 Youth Dance Company, from Grassy Park, are strutting their stuff at the National Arts Festival, in Grahamstown.
The dance company is spearheaded by Wendi Abrahams, a former Cafda Dance Theatre instructor, who took the reins after Cafda closed its dance school in 2015.
She saw the need to continue with a community dance project on the Cape Flats.
“Today more than 100 children attend the classes to be trained in the art of classical ballet and
modern dance,” said Ms Abrahams. The dance company will participate in four shows from today, Wednes-
day
July 5, until Saturday July 8. Their theme is “Momentum”.
Ms Abrahams said: “We have 12 dancers and five young South African choreographers as well as myself. We aim to reboot community dance, which can only gather ‘Momentum’.”
The programme consists of Calm after the storm, choreographed by Jamie-Lee Jansen; We breathe, we dance, by
Wendi Abrahams; Play by Sasha Fourie Myburgh; Surreal by Marlin Zoutman; Why did you have to die, Zoe? (Gravity)
by Bernadette Langeveldt; and 34/18 Get Jiggy by Rudi Ward.
