This is an open letter to all in the line of food security knowledge in schools.
I was reading an article about a country where the government has implemented at schools from almost kindergarten to matric, education on how pupils can start growing fruit and vegetables and when and how to do so.
I am hoping that our education department in conjunction with the department of agriculture and nurseries and not forgetting farmers start a major project for our youth on how to grow vegetables at schools and at home, especially with the cost of living rising.
If a child is taught how to do this, given a mini starter pack and starts a vegetable garden, their enthusiasm and gained knowledge can infect their parents or others in their families and neighbourhood to create own sustainable farms in the yards and even balconies.
Why I know this will be well received is that my one granddaughter, with advice, planted a few tomato seeds and was almost fanatical in the care of those tomato plants and had indescribable joy in harvesting and enjoying her tomatoes with her parents.
Sometimes one has to plant a seed of an idea and maybe or hopefully the right people will promote the idea.
