Aubrey Charles Robinson, Cafda
It’s with great sadness that in less than a week, three men lost their lives by shooting (gang related).
These shootings occurred less than 200 meters from the camera at Sharon Assembly of God Church in Peter Charles Street, Retreat, which brings me to the question: is it operational, switched on and working?
My second question is about the illegal dumping right opposite where this camera is. The dumping of rubbish is happening daily, and the area looks disgusting, with dogs sniffing through the rubbish in the hope of finding something to eat. The families whose backyards are nearw the open space endure mice and possibly rats too.
We have so many SAPS and Law Enforcement vans patrolling in the area during the week, yet people are dumping, and gangsters are not stopped and searched. But what I picked up is that these officers stop and search innocent boys and write down their names in a book. I’m not against the mandate of the Law Enforcement Officers but I’m in the community where these things happen. It’s time to get rid of the drug merchants and not the buyers.
Diana Smith, senior foreman of Solid Waste Management/ Contract Management Unit, responds:
The contractor’s team is not reinstated yet, should still be within this week. I have requested mechanical assistance from our specialized services unit, pending on availability of their resources.
Inspector Jacobus Gelant, Ottery Law Enforcement, responds:
In reply to the stop and searches in the area, we as officers are treating everyone the same, we cannot distinguish who are dealers and who are buyers unless we have the support of the community which is very seldom.
Southern Mail sent the enquiry about the camera a week ago to the City of Cape Town. There was no response at the time of publication.
