Battswood Baseball Club’s consistency against Goodwood in the Cape Town Baseball Federation Masters League continued as they were rewarded with a 9-7 win, in Lansdowne, on Saturday, February 3.
Battswood’s Oscar “Tarras” Layman said the players from both teams showed up and showed off some of their finest skills on the diamond, at Chukker Road.
“The game was played in the right spirit. A true masters spirit. It is about enjoying. Some of the gentlemen come with a lot of stress but for two hours they get to be civil and release,” said Layman.
Good batting by Cheslin Pasquili and Lyle Farrel troubled the visiting Goodwood side. Layman said Battswood’s frontline came through at the most crucial of stages.
“They gave us a run but we came through. We had an extra turn left to bat. At the end of the day, the pitching of both sides was there. Our batting was very decent at crucial times,” said Layman.
Goodwood Baseball Club’s Preston Petersen said they had revived the club over the last two years.
“We resurrected the old Goodwood Baseball Club. We are into our second season now. Next season we are planning to expand the club and add junior teams in each division over the next three years. We will approach the schools in the area and get the juniors moving.
“We were struggling with the pitching on Saturday. Our batting was lukewarm, there was no fireworks. But the gentlemen are coming together. We are beginning to find our game,” said Petersen.
Battswood will travel up to Strand on Saturday, while Goodwood looks to host Grassy Park’s Crusaders at Milton Road in Goodwood, with both games at 1pm.
