Central Hockey Club in top 5

Central Hockey Club celebrates their opening goal in their 5-2 victory against Langa, at the weekend.

Central Hockey Club beat Langa’s first team 5-2 in an entertaining Western Province Hockey Union (WPHU) Men’s Grand Challenge league match in Langa, at the weekend.

This was Langa’s first defeat of the season and it came against a Central team who were the underdogs of the day.

Saturday’s win saw Central move up to fourth spot with 11 points, just behind UCT’s first team in third place. They are also two points behind second-placed Langa and log-leaders, Stellenbosch.

A fortnight ago, Central surprised UCT’s second team side with a 3-0 win. They also beat Fish Hoek’s first team 4-3 at home earlier this month.

Last month they played to a goalless draw against UCT’s first team at home just a week after their 2-2 draw against Victorians in Stellenbosch.

Central have won three of their six games in the campaign, and Saturday’s victory was certainly a confidence booster for the Athlone based side ahead of their away fixture against a struggling Milnerton on Sunday May 26.

Milnerton have lost five of their six opening games. Their hardest hammering came against Maties in a 7-1 loss in Stellenbosch last month. At the weekend, Milnerton played to a 2-2 draw against Vics.

Milnerton currently sit in 10th position with one point. Above Milnerton is UCT’s second team with three points.

UCT’s 3-2 win came against Milnerton during the season opener last month at UCT. It happens to be their only win since, after losing four straight encounters.

Meanwhile, Fish Hoek’s 1-1 draw against UCT’s first team at the weekend saw them move to seventh spot with seven points in the campaign.

Fish Hoek started the season well after winning 4-3 against WPCC and 2-1 against Pinelands, but after the 1-0 win against Vics in Stellies, they have been struggling.

In the middle of the table are WPCC with nine points. Their 2-1 win against Pinelands at the weekend meant they’ve now won three and lost three, with their biggest win being the 5-0 hammering of UCT at home.

At the weekend, WPCC will have their fingers tied when they play against Vics at home. Vics are a point behind them in sixth spot.
