Life looked busy from the Philippi Plaza parking lot on Saturday — there was a traffic jam, pedestrians strolling in to run their errands at the mall and, right in the centre of it all, a boxing ring was set.
In the late morning and early afternoon, Future Champs, in partnership with Grassroots Boxing and Too Much Wifi hosted the Drama on The Plaza amateur tournament, sanctioned by the South African Boxing Federation (SABOF).
At least 38 bouts took place between 76 young fighters from Philippi, Langa, Khayelitsha, Atlantis and neighbouring townships.
Boxing promoter, Jeremey Bean said the event aimed to develop boxers from all across the province.
Bean said they are preparing an all inclusive sports facility at the Philippi Plaza that will attract more young boxers to take up the sport.
Western Cape boxing personality, Zola Koti acknowledged all those involved in making the event a success.
In the crowd were also professional fighter Christian Bobo, artist Samora Magwa and SABOF member and trainer Jongi Kamko.
