Plans to revive boxing in province

The future of local boxing is looking bright, says 9Sai boxing manager, Welsh Macibela.

Macibela was among a group of administrators, promoters, managers, coaches and former champions from across the province who met at the African Theological College, in Khayelitsha, last Saturday, to discuss the nomination of board members to Boxing SA.

The names will be submitted to the national Department of Sports and Recreation and seven positions are vacant.

Also at the meeting were coaches from Atlantis, Mbuyiselo Mlenzana and William Andrews, well known boxing manager Zola Koti, The Box manager Jongi Komko, and former WBF‚ IBF Intercontinental and WBA International bantamweight champion, Mzuvukile Magwaca.

Koti said the group strongly believes that Mava Malla, Andile Ndevu and Nika Khumalo would advocate for the promotion of Western Province-based boxers and events on a national and international scale so were putting their names forward.

“What we are asking for is, when there is an issue that is being debated, that person (nominee), since they are from the Western Cape, they can be able to advocate for the province, they can approach stakeholders that are here for the benefit of events like boxing awards to come to Cape Town or the Western Cape,” he said.

“If there is a vacant boxing spot and we, here in the province, have a boxer that is highly ranked, one of the three names we have listed will be able to raise their voice for that boxer to have an advantage to fight for that vacant belt,” he said.

“There are probably over 400 names that will apply for the seven spots Minister Nathi Mthethwa, is looking for at the Department of Sports and Recreation.

“What will talk is if a person has a strong CV and a good motivation, that will play to their advantage if there should be a vote,” said Koti.

Boxing administrator Xolisani Nkqintamo said, should the nominees get chosen to represent the province on a national level they may be able to advocate for boxers and events in the rural parts of the province on a larger scale.

Macibela said the future of boxing is becoming better by the day due to growing support.
