The St Joseph’s Christmas Band, in Grassy
Park has been going strong for 84 years and
is encouraging other bands to get compliant
and empower the youth to join its music academy.
Band secretary,Desiree Claasen, said it was
established in 1936 and based in Constantia at
the time. It had 12 members which included the
September, Pelston and Jacobs families.
The band moved to Protea in 1938, to Newlands in 1940 and then to Brentwood Road in
Wynberg in 1945. Then in 1972 it moved to the
home of late president Hannes September in 2nd
Avenue Fairways, until 2010. His son, Albert September’s home in Grassy Park then became the
band’s new residence.
Following the last move, she said, a music
academy was formed which now has 20 members
which are taught how to read music and play
instruments.
