In April of 2014 it was announced that Concert Boulevard in Retreat would be renamed in honour of Struggle veteran Joseph Johannes Marks.
The change in street name came after a lengthy public participation process during which residents were given the opportunity to have their say.
Mr Marks was a United Democratic Front (UDF) founding member who died in 2011 at the age of 75.
He played an important role in the civics movement and was an active community leader.
Leaving behind his wife Magdalene and his seven children, Joe Marks left a proud heritage and that is one of the reasons why the City of Cape Town decided to name one of Retreat’s main arteries to the activist.
A year later, in April 2015, Mayor Patricia de Lille officially unveiled Joe Marks Boulevard and even though some still call it Concert Boulevard, by habit, the memory of the stalwart will forever be on display.
