Thanks to tip-offs from the community, Grassy Park police were able to arrest three people on charges under the pharmacy act.
Officers received information about cough medicine and dagga being sold at a house in 7th Avenue Grassy Park. On Monday October 15, at about 4.05pm, officers searched the house they found 57 small packets and one medium bag containing dagga, with an estimated value of R1 300 as well as an imitation firearm.
Two men and a women, aged between 22 and 49, were arrested on charges of dealing and being in possession of dagga and will also face charges under the pharmacy act as the suspects did not have a licence to have so much Bronclear medicine in their possession.
Grassy Park police spokesperson, Warrant Officer,Wynita Kleinsmith said information received revealed that school children were buying it at the residence located next to a high school.
In the same week, while visiting a crime scene on the corner of 4th Avenue and Kleinsmidt Street, in Grassy Park, near the open field, Captain Ashley Petersen found several empty coug syrup bottles.
“This to us is a clear indication that scholars are using this medicine. This is of a concern to Grassy Park police as it was found next to a high school, this medication contains codeine and is not a prescription medication, its freely available to children, who mix it with Sprite cooldrink.
“The effect this medication has on children, when used with other substances could have an effect on their liver, kidneys and maybe other organs.
“This could be detrimental to their life and well-being. According to information gathered, when consuming this intoxicating medication, it puts you on a high,” said Warrant Officer Kleinsmith.
She urged parents to observe their children and if suspected to be using this concoction, to take them to health professional to be tested.
“We further plea to pharmacies not to sell this non-prescription medication to children and to ask for an identification document when purchased,” she said.
The suspects will make their first appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.
On the same day, at about 3.40pm, officers from the Western Cape Tactical Response Team arrested a 33-year-old man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in St Albert Street, St Montague Village, after they received information from residents.
The officers confiscated an Astra 38 special revolver with serial number R445715 with 7 rounds of ammunition. The suspect is due to make a
court appearance in Wynberg Magistrate’s Ccourt.
