Police say they are following all possible leads in the killing of well-known Phumlani Village community leader Peter Mgutyana, who was shot in his house on Tuesday March 5.
Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith said police were called to the scene of the shooting in Buzzard Road, Phumlani Village, at about 9.30pm.
Mr Mgutyana, 51, was found with a gunshot wound to his face. Warrant Officer Kleinsmith said there were no witnesses or suspects and the motive for the shooting was unknown. Mr Mgutyana’s sister, Tammy Mgutyana, said when he came to Cape Town from the Eastern Cape he started showing interest in helping people in Phumlani Village when the area was not developed yet around 2004.
Ms Mgutyana said Peter helped people get housing since Phumlani Village was still a bushy area.
“He used his influence and contacted people in the ANC to help people set up shacks and RDP housing. “
When asked how she felt about the death of her brother, Ms Mgutyana said: “I am a Christian and I believe we all die in different ways. We may be knocked down by a car, stabbed with a knife or we may get sick.”
She said Peter loved his community and played an instrumental role in uplifting the youth. He had started a soccer club called Phumlani Eagles Football Club.
Long-time ANC comrade Advocate Hishaam Mohamed, who had introduced Southern Mail to Mr Mgutyana for previous stories, said he visited the family home to pay respects. “The family including Peter’s mother appreciated our support and from our local branch members who visited earlier in the week”
Mr Mgutyana’s body will be transported to the Eastern Cape on Thursday March 21 and he will be buried on Saturday March 23.
