A total of 21 people have been left homeless following a fire in Drury Road, Vrygrond last night.
Twelve informal structures were destroyed by the blaze which broke out around 7pm.
Five firefighting appliances, a rescue vehicle and 21 staff members were dispatched to the scene. They managed to extinguish the fire at 8.25pm.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Disaster risk management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, said: “A request was sent to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to provide humanitarian relief. Various City services are on site and assisting the affected community.”
