Funny man Keenan Cerff will be cooking up new jokes in the Steenberg “hood”, close to the area where he was born and raised, on Sunday November 28, at 5pm.
The Cooking up New Jokes Show will be held at Cerff’s friends Tracy-Lee Jones and Oswin Rodgers’ house and cafe called Ossie’s Tawakkal, 31 Flute Street, Steenberg.
Cerff has been compiling new jokes over the past two years since the lockdown started. “A lot has happened, I’ve changed a bit and I think differently and in this show I explore those thoughts,“ he said.
Cerff said he thought it was time to bring laughter back to his community. “I chose the couple Tracy-Lee Jones and Oswin Rodgers’ venue because I met them at a comedy show once, we hit it off and have been friends ever since.”
Cerff, who hails from Lavender Hill, said he always wanted to perform his act in different parts of the area he grew up in.
“I loved the idea of bringing comedy to my area.”
While growing up he said he always had moments of making random comments. “I noticed people laughed,” he said.
“I once saw Russell Peters, Canadian stand-up comedian, actor, and producer’s DVD and I was like ’this is comedy’,” he said about when the comedy bug bit him.
The first time he was on stage was during a high school talent show at Steenberg High School hall. “I was the host and I told a joke that made the crowd go crazy and it was at that moment I knew I wanted to try comedy professionally.”
Asked what makes him cope when hit with the struggles of life, he said besides writing jokes, “my coping mechanism is to cry on the phone when I call my Ouma Netta and she tells me everything is going to be okay.”
Cerff’s motto in life is, “Just to be happy; I like to do what makes me happy.”
He has performed in other cities such as East London, Johannesburg, Durban, Sedgefield as well as cities in Mozambique.
Cerff is living his dream as a stand-up comedian and he said “as long as I get to do that, I’m happy, oh and spending time with Ouma Netta of course.”
