Fairways couple Henry and Frances Jacobs celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday December 2. Mr Jacobs, 86, is a former principal of Sentinel Secondary School in Hout Bay, and Ms Jacobs, 88, is a former matron at Somerset Hospital. They met in Cape Town through friends, says their daughter Lynne-Louise Chang.
When the couple decided to get married they moved to Green Point but were forcibly removed due to the Group Areas Act in 1967 and they relocated to Fairways.
“My dad spent 25 years in Hout Bay as principal at Sentinel Secondary School and he retired 28 years ago in 1993,” says Ms Chang.
Her father has kept himself busy in retirements, she says, by greening his neighbourhood and planting trees along the railway line.
