Sacred Unity Circle are hosting the Matriarch March from Muizenberg to Princess Vlei on Human Rights Day, Thursday March 21.
The non-profit company was established in 2022.
One of the founding members, Kelly Collier, from Lotus River, said it was prompted by a realisation that active involvement and problem-solving are essential for community development.
“Our initiative comprises a dynamic collective of women from various religious, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Our primary objective is to promote the establishment of secure environments where women and girls can freely express their creativity, exchange intergenerational wisdom and knowledge, and participate in skill-building activities,” said Ms Collier.
“While our founders are deeply committed to nation-building and creating a path that moves beyond the pain of history, we are also deeply aware of the ongoing challenges and hardships that persist for the people of the Cape Flats,” said Ms Collier.
The starting points for the walk are: Point 1 – Sunrise Beach (7km) at 8am, Point 2 – Capricorn Boulevard at (6.5km) at 8.30am, Point 3 – Military Road (4km) at 9am, and Point 4 – Retreat Road (2km) at 9.30am. The estimated arrival at Princess Vlei is 10am/ 10.15am.
“We have engaged the support of Steenberg police and Grassy Park Neighbourhood Watch Unit who will assist with safety along the route and also assist with marshalling along the points of the walk,” said Ms Collier.
When the walkers arrive at the end point in Princess Vlei, there will be educational workshops focused on personal development, mindfulness, and holistic wellness, a healing hub that focuses on health, wellness, and natural medicine and the programme will feature a sharing by local musicians and poets.
Mr Collier said: “We would also like to develop an environmental education aspect to our Matriarch March programme for next year (2025) and welcome any collaborators that can work with us in this regard.”
The participation fee of R25 a person is payable by Friday March 15. RSVP to Gail to book your group entry on 076 989 8392. For more information contact Kelly at 074 424 3769.
