Seniors from the Retreat Older Person’s Forum put their needles to work when they knitted goodies for those at the Sunrise Special Care Centre in Elfindale.
The centre in Chadwin Road cares for children and adults with profound intellectual disabilities.
The forum’s Mercia de Waal said the seniors spent about three months knitting the goods, which included toys and jerseys.
The project was made possible thanks to a generous monetary donation.
Sophia Jenkins, 83, Kathy de Waal, 90 and Betty Saunders, 90, said it was a pleasure spending time at the centre and knitting for the residents.
“It’s a little labour of love and contribution we decided to make and we hope this is an encouragement to other people to put their knitting to good use and donate to places like the Sunrise Special Care Centre. We are blessed and we wanted to bless the precious people at the facility,” said Ms De Waal.
Ward 72 councillor Kevin Southgate said the seniors are inspiring.
“These ladies have shown that you’re never too old to give back. Even at their age they are still sowing positive seeds back into the community. It is such an honour to be associated with such thoughtful seniors and younger generations should take their lead,” said Mr Southgate.
