Volunteers are needed to help run literacy training for Grade 2 and 3 children at six city primary schools. The Western Cape Metro Central Education District is piloting the Shine Literacy Hour Programme (SLH) at Garden Village Primary in Maitland, Portavue Primary in Surrey Estate, Portia Primary in Lansdowne, Surrey Primary in Surrey Estate, Wesley Methodist Practising Primary in Salt River and Holy Cross Primary in Walmer Estate. The programme gives individualised support to Foundation Phase pupils to strengthen their reading, writing and language skills. Trained volunteers work with the children once or twice a week during the school day. All volunteers will receive training.
