A garden tea party at a Constantia home has raised R25 000 for an underprivileged school in Retreat.
Soroptimist International Cape of Good Hope organised the Vintage Garden Tea Party fund-raiser for 90 guests on Saturday October 26.
The proceeds went to Lourier Primary School in Retreat.
The club has supported Lourier Primary School since 2012, when they established a library at the school.
Members of the club still volunteer at the school, and the club pays the school’s librarian a stipend.
Lourier Primary School is a Quintile 4 school, but most of the parents are unable to pay fees.
Janice Brown, deputy principal, spoke at the tea party about the problems the school faced and its many needs.
According to Ms Brown, many of the children come to school hungry and this is where the Peninsula School Feeding Scheme
plays a role, but this is never enough as the allocation is far below the number of pupils at the school.
The school is appealing to the public for whiteboards, data projectors, sports equipment and stationery.
The tea-party proceeds will be used to buy benches for the playground because it doesn’t have grass and there’s nowhere for the children to sit at break.
The club has installed a fence between the lower and higher grade pupils for a safer play environment.
Soroptimist spokeswoman, Lisette Genseberger, said the school’s teachers were highly motivated and very protective of the children in their care.
If anyone is able to assist, contact the school at 021 713 6753 or the Soroptimist International Cape of Good Hope Club president, Marjorie Wohlmann at marjorie.wohlmann@gmail.com
